The author, Len King, is a licensed Architect and Builder with
over 30 years
experience in both commercial and residential buildings. He spent the
previous 15 years in
western North Carolina with his own design build business. Numerous homes
were completed both conventional and more
progressive as well as hospitality projects. You can see some of his work
at the following web page: www.lkarchplan.com
As he said in the book's introduction of his years of
residential design build :
"
one thing was apparent; There is no one type person or couple who are
interested in the design of a new home. Instead people range from:
-
the I want to
‘control every detail and step’,
-
to the hands off;
‘just give me the essence of what I want’.
-
And to every where in
between.
The only common
thread with everyone was that plan books just never hit the design head square
on. More over we clearly discovered there was the lack of good design
guides. There is a lot of material on styles, decorating and aesthetics but for
some reason we saw little practical design help presented efficiently".
As a result Len decided to write this book as he
traveled seeing America's sights. The
book is filled with his personal knowledge and insights into America's
housing design. Insights, by the way, that few Architects have the
comprehensive experience to have had. He has worked intimately not only
with his clients but with engineers, carpentry crews,
subcontractors and suppliers. In short there is no part or aspect of the
industry he is not adept in. He has also taught at several western
North Carolina community colleges.
If you have always yearned to build or design your own
dream home this book will provide you years and years of an Architect's
design knowledge and go a long way in helping you arrive at a better
designed home without many of the possible mishaps.
On another hand, if you are a 'budding' or even experienced residential
designer Len's book will serve as a design manual to fill in many of the
blank spaces between the technical material and the builders.
Len hopes you enjoy and find this effort useful.
